A project is “a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service, or result” (PMBOK Guide, Third Edition, 2004, p.5). According to the article, what is the final product or service?

Answer:

The establishment of an IT project management office (PMO) is believed to be the product. Services to be provided by the PMO for the beneficiaries to handle their challenges in the state of South Carolina. They implemented practices such as:

v Development of a project management methodology

v Establishment of training and certifying programs

v Creation of reporting requirements for various project types

v Dissemination of information resources to support “best practices”

v Development of a high trained project management staff

v Support of forums, committees, meetings and organizations

Question 2:

$2.3 trillion is not a small amount of money. In your opinion with regards to theory, how was the project sponsor(s) persuaded to invest in such a project? Give examples of tools used during the initiating phase for this purpose.

Answer:

“No area is faced with a more constantly changing landscape than the field of information technology (IT)”, this statement basically defines or explains the above question. The project sponsor(s) in their respective fields of practice (construction, research, development, IT) felt need that traditional management processes are not able to adequately deal with the dynamics of today’s economic, business environment.

Tools used in the initiating phase of this project were;

1.) Developing a business case

2.) Undertaking a feasibility studies

3.) Establishing project charter

4.) Appointment of project team

5.) Set up the project office

6.) Perform a phase review

The Project Initiation Phase is the most crucial phase in the Project Life Cycle, as it's the phase in which you define your scope and hire your team.
